A remark by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's father has started a political row, with senior BJP leaders demanding an apology, Hindustan Times reported.

What happened

Kharge was speaking in Bihar at an event marking the 139th birth anniversary of Shrikrishna Singh, the state's first chief minister. He said the Congress would send those allegedly involved in irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls to jail.

A man in the audience shouted, "Modi won't go anywhere." Kharge retorted in Hindi, which HT translated as "Even Modi's father will go."

The man behind the shout

Speaking to reporters later, the man identified himself as Santhosh Kumar, a Congress worker from Chhapra. He said people had mistaken him for a BJP worker. "What I meant was that as long as there is no rebellion in the country, Narendra Modi won't go anywhere," he said, according to PTI.

BJP leaders condemn the remark

  • The BJP called the statement "shameful, sorrowful and utterly condemnable" and demanded that Kharge apologise to the country. A BJP worker also filed a police complaint against him.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah said Kharge had "torn apart all norms of decorum by making an indecent remark about Modi ji's father in Patna", and accused the Congress of repeatedly insulting the Prime Minister and his family.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he was "stunned and hurt" by the remark.
  • BJP MP Anurag Thakur told ANI that Kharge must offer an unreserved apology, calling the remark a sign of the Congress's "ideological bankruptcy".

What next

The HT report does not carry a response from Kharge or the Congress to the BJP's criticism. The police complaint filed by the BJP worker is the next thing to watch.
