The TDP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was winning most of the wards declared on Tuesday (November 3) as votes were counted in Andhra Pradesh's urban local body elections, according to live coverage by The Hindu and India TV. These figures are as of Tuesday afternoon, with counting still under way.
By about 3 pm, results had been declared in 1,937 of 3,942 wards, India TV reported. The tally:
- NDA: 1,724 wards (TDP 1,427, Jana Sena 216, BJP 81)
- YSRCP: 185
- Left parties: 6 (CPI(M) 3, CPI 3)
- Independents: 22
The elections cover 13 municipal corporations, 77 municipalities and 10 nagar panchayats, India TV reported. The NDA was ahead in all 13 corporations in early trends, The Hindu reported; India TV's update at 3 pm had it leading in 11 of the 13.
Key contests
- Pulivendula: Y.S. Prameelamma, aunt of former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSRCP candidate for municipal chairperson, was leading in early trends. Counting began after the High Court reportedly declined the YSRCP's plea for a repoll over violence and alleged irregularities on polling day, November 1.
- Pithapuram, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's constituency: Jana Sena led in five of the first nine wards counted.
- Kuppam, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's constituency: TDP and YSRCP workers argued at the counting centre after YSRCP workers alleged manipulation; police said the situation stayed under control.
- Visakhapatnam (GVMC): The CPI(M) won the first ward declared, Ward 105, and the TDP and Jana Sena also opened their accounts.
- Punganur and Rayachoti: Many wards were decided unopposed before polling, mostly in the TDP's favour; all 44 wards in Rayachoti were settled that way.
Why counting was delayed
Cyclone Murasu, which crossed the coast near Ongole early on Tuesday, pushed back counting in Bapatla and Prakasam districts from 8 am to 11.30 am, and in Ongole it began only at noon. Counting in Chirala was postponed because of heavy rain. In Parvathipuram, the strong-room keys went missing; the locks were broken open with all parties' consent after a two-hour delay, and the State Election Commission suspended two officials.
What next
Final results, including who will head each corporation and municipality, are expected by the evening; Nellore's collector said results there were expected by 6 pm.
