Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday urged students across the country to join the INDIA bloc's protest in Delhi on November 1, which seeks the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, The Indian Express reported.

Mr. Gandhi will lead the "Chalo Delhi Ramlila March" at Ramlila Maidan. In a video message posted on X, he said the march was not any one party's protest but one for everyone fed up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Mr. Kumar.

His message to students

"Don't worry about the police, don't worry about lathis — the BJP will not have the guts to try any of their antics. Come march with us — we will walk together to protect the Constitution, to protect the Indian nation," he said.

"I urge all student groups, regardless of your political affiliation — if you feel that India is under attack, if you feel you are under attack, your expression, your ideas, your way of thinking is under attack, come and join us," he added.

The mock 'impeachment'

The opposition alliance also plans a symbolic "public impeachment" of the CEC on Saturday as part of its "vote chori" campaign against the Election Commission and the Centre, the newspaper reported. After the authorities refused permission to hold it at Ramlila Maidan, it will be held at Mr. Kharge's residence at 10, Rajaji Marg.

According to sources quoted in the report, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will preside and Mr. Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, will introduce the motion. Parties will get speaking time according to their strength in Parliament, and civil society members and people whose names were removed from the rolls will also be invited to speak.

Why it matters

The opposition says its motions seeking Mr. Kumar's removal were turned down in both Houses of Parliament. The presiding officers rejected them in April, and a senior Congress MP said the alliance would now take its case to the public. The demand is tied to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the opposition says has wrongly removed voters' names.

The Congress has set state units turnout targets for the rally, with the western Uttar Pradesh unit asked to bring at least 25,000 people, according to a party leader.

The Indian Express report did not carry a response from the Election Commission or the BJP to the protest call.
