Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge alleged on Monday that a Union Minister is pressuring the Centre to use the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department against him and his Cabinet colleagues, The Hindu reported.

In a post on X, he alleged that the investigation into alleged irregularities in Karnataka Public Service Commission recruitment was being used as cover.

"Whispers in Delhi's corridors of power is that a Union Minister is desperately pressuring Modi Sarkar to weaponise the IT and ED against my Cabinet colleagues and me, using the KPSC investigation as political cover," he wrote.

What he alleged

Kharge also claimed that a person he described as the "RSS's newest Group D recruit" was "reportedly attempting to use the ED to pressure all accused to falsely implicate Congress leaders and me in the KPSC recruitment case".

He did not name the Union Minister, The Hindu reported. The post cited no evidence for the claims, and described them as "whispers" and something "reportedly" under way.

The reports reviewed carried no response from the Centre, the agencies or any Union Minister. These remain allegations.

Why it matters

The claim comes as the KPSC matter moves on two fronts, in court and in politics.

In a separate KPSC Veterinary Officer recruitment case, the Karnataka High Court on October 28 pulled up the State for failing to notify a Special Investigation Team as a police station, and said the lapse had left the probe at a "standstill", LiveLaw reported. The Supreme Court had on October 13 upheld the team's constitution while leaving changes to its membership to the High Court. The Hindu reported that the High Court was to name a new head for the team on Monday.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said last month that the commission would be given a "new form", and that permission had been given to question an accused in the case, Hindustan Times reported.

Kharge has himself faced allegations in this row, which he denies. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy alleged in August that Kharge was complicit in an alleged Assistant Executive Engineer recruitment scam when he headed the Rural Development department, The News Minute reported. Kharge challenged him to produce evidence and said he would quit politics if his involvement was proven.

The BJP has demanded his resignation, which Kharge has rejected, questioning the party's silence on one of the main accused, Deccan Chronicle reported.

Kharge's post on Monday did not say which minister he was referring to.
