The opposition INDIA bloc is stepping up its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with a mock "public impeachment" planned for October 30 and a rally in Delhi on November 1, Hindustan Times reported.
The opposition's plans
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday invited students, farmers, workers, women, young people and traders to a "Chalo Dilli" march and rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. "Our votes are being stolen, and we will not tolerate this quietly under any circumstances," he wrote on X.
Before that, the bloc will hold what it calls a "mock Parliament" at Hotel Ashok on October 30, where opposition MPs will deliver a "public verdict" against the CEC.
Why the CEC is under fire
The protests grew after The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions by the poll body, including some linked to the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter rolls. The Election Commission rejected the report, saying major decisions were taken unanimously by the full commission.
The BJP's response
The BJP rejected the opposition's charges point by point on X. It said:
- Voters flagged in the draft rolls as dead, shifted or duplicate are not removed without verification, with 20 lakh party agents checking.
- 2.37 crore voters have been added since the SIR began.
- Major decisions are taken by consensus of all three commissioners: "Discussion isn't dissent."
Protests and police action
Delhi Police have registered 57 cases this month over protests demanding the CEC's resignation, and moved them all to the Crime Branch. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the capital's law and order at police headquarters on Saturday.
Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party, which has led several protests, say they will continue despite agreeing not to protest at Jantar Mantar while it is not a designated protest site. Delhi's Chamber of Trade and Industry has asked Gandhi to postpone the rally until after November 10 because of the Diwali shopping season.
