Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that BJP supporters attacked his residence on Kalighat Road in Kolkata at about 2 am on Saturday (November 7), and called it "the seventh attempt on my life in the last six months", The Hindu reported. The BJP dismissed his claims.

What happened

TMC supporters had gathered outside his house, which also serves as an old party office, around midnight for his birthday, according to local reports cited by India.com. A group of BJP supporters arrived and raised slogans calling him a "thief", and birthday banners and cut-outs were torn, The Hindu reported. An argument turned into a clash, with stones, sticks and other objects allegedly used by both sides, before police separated the groups, India.com reported. A report by Aaj Tak Bangla put the number injured at seven or more; there has been no official figure.

Mr Banerjee shared videos on X. They show a man hitting the gate of a building with a bamboo stick, people throwing objects towards the premises, and police personnel pushing the crowd back.

His allegations

  • "After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today," he wrote. A day earlier, he had posted that unidentified people had been watching his house and office for two days and had claimed to be police when questioned.
  • He alleged that some attackers carried revolvers and came with a "premeditated intent to kill", and that two TMC colleagues were seriously injured, The Free Press Journal reported. The paper noted that the claims about firearms and the full extent of injuries were not independently established.
  • He said there had been "no police action and no judicial intervention", criticised the courts, and had a heated exchange with police outside the house before a brief sit-in.

The BJP's response

Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh dismissed the allegations as "drama", The Free Press Journal reported. No statement from Kolkata Police on the incident or on any arrests has been reported.

Background

The BJP came to power in West Bengal in May 2026. Since then, more than 20 FIRs have been registered against Mr Banerjee, and his personal assistant Sumit Roy has been arrested, The Hindu reported; the TMC says Mr Roy is being forced to depose against him. On Thursday, Mr Banerjee said the TMC had lost the elections "to the Supreme Court, not to the BJP".
