Delhi's Metro network could grow by 279 km, from 416 km to 695 km, under transport proposals being discussed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), NDTV reported. The Namo Bharat regional rail network across the NCR is proposed to grow from 82 km to 383 km.

The proposals, part of the Master Plan for Delhi 2047, were discussed on Friday at the DDA's 11th stakeholder meeting, attended by Delhi Metro, traffic police and other agencies on the directions of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

Easier transfers

The plan aims to make it simpler to switch between the Metro, regional rail, buses and other transport. Sarai Kale Khan, Anand Vihar and Kashmere Gate have been named as major hubs, and feeder services and shared transport would improve the last mile from stations.

Fewer bottlenecks

A Delhi Traffic Police review in June found congestion had eased at 34 of 62 traffic hotspots, but stretches around Dwarka Mor, Sarai Kale Khan and Mukarba Chowk remained problems. The plan proposes:

  • New roads, underpasses and elevated corridors, and fixes at busy junctions.
  • Parking Management Areas in crowded neighbourhoods, with AI-based traffic and parking management.
  • About 200 km of cycle tracks, safer footpaths and better access for people with disabilities.

The DDA has already floated a tender for the first phase of a 24-km cycling track along the Yamuna. Separately, the Centre approved a ₹1,789 crore intelligent traffic management project for 42 Delhi corridors in September.

Who will coordinate it

A Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has been proposed to coordinate planning across agencies. The Master Plan 2047 was notified on August 20, and the DDA is now consulting on how to implement it.
