The Karnataka government has raised bus fares across all four state-run transport corporations, BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC, with the new fares taking effect from midnight on Wednesday (November 4), The Hindu reported.
The average increase is about 23% for KSRTC and between 33% and 35% for BMTC in Bengaluru. The hike covers ordinary, express, long-distance and airport services.
What you will pay
Selected fares, old and new, from The Hindu and ANI:
- BMTC minimum fare: ₹6 to ₹10
- Hebbal to Kempegowda International Airport: ₹175 to ₹200
- Nelamangala to Majestic: ₹35 to ₹44
- Doddaballapur to Majestic: ₹38 to ₹47
- Bengaluru to Magadi or Malur: ₹46 to ₹57
- Bengaluru to Kolar or Tumakuru (express): ₹81 to ₹100
- Bengaluru to Mysuru (express): ₹160 to ₹197
- Bengaluru to Hassan (express): ₹219 to ₹270
On BMTC ordinary buses, trips of up to 2 km cost ₹4 more, trips of 2-4 km ₹6 more, and the biggest increase on longer trips is ₹12, ANI reported. Fares for premium Vajra and Volvo services could be revised from time to time, the minister said.
Why fares went up
Transport minister Byrathi Suresh said the revision was needed because of rising diesel prices, higher spending on spare parts and maintenance, and wage revision for employees. The four corporations together lose about ₹2,000 crore a year, he said.
He said the Shakti scheme of free travel for women was not to blame, since the government reimburses the corporations for those tickets, although payments are sometimes delayed.
How it compares
The hike is smaller than the 45% recommended by the Public Transport Fare Regulatory Committee, chaired by retired IAS officer Atul Kumar Tiwari. The corporations' boards had asked for up to 90%, Mr Suresh said.
It comes a week after the state announced a price rise of upwards of ₹8 on all categories of milk and curd, The Hindu reported. The announcement itself caused confusion: at the press conference, the minister asked reporters to work out the percentage increases themselves, and an official fare chart was handed out only after repeated requests.
