The family of a 21-year-old man from Chhattisgarh says he has been detained in Russia and is being tortured to make him join the war in Ukraine, and has asked the authorities to bring him home, Hindustan Times reported.

Vinit Kumar Dubey, from Bilha in Bilaspur district, travelled to Russia on October 1 after being offered a job through a Telegram group, his teenage sister said. She has complained to the Bilaspur police and written to the district administration.

What the family says

His sister told ANI that he had been offered a job at a food storage facility for about $1,200 a month. "However, once he arrived, his job description was changed; he was told he would be doing delivery work instead," she said. He was put up in a hotel with a young man from Jordan.

The family has not heard from him since October 7. On the night of October 10, she said, someone called from a Russian number and said he had been implicated in a narcotics case and was being forced to join the war. The family first took the call for a scam and stopped talking to the caller. She alleged that the same person later said Vinit was being tortured to make him join.

She emailed the Indian embassy on October 8 to report him missing. "The embassy replied that it would look into the matter and try to trace his whereabouts," she told PTI.

These are the family's allegations; they have not been independently confirmed.

What the authorities have done

Bilaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Rajnesh Singh confirmed the complaint. "We have written to the Indian embassy about a week ago, but have not received a response so far," he said, adding that further action would follow once they hear back.

Collector Sanjay Agrawal said the district administration had also approached the Ministry of External Affairs. The embassy and the MEA have not commented on the case.

Why it matters

The case shows how job offers found on messaging apps, with no recruiting agency or written contract, can leave workers stranded abroad with no one to answer for them. Families in such cases have to rely on the police, the district administration and the embassy to trace them.
