Actor Imran Khan has asked the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for the papers and evidence behind a show-cause notice that warns his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status could be cancelled, The Times of India reported, citing NDTV.
In his letter to the FRRO, he called the grounds in the notice vague and inconsistent. He also said the authorities appeared to have already formed a tentative view that his OCI status may be cancelled.
His objections
Mr. Khan said a Mumbai Police report cited by the FRRO was incomplete, and that he had not been given the documents the notice relies on. He asked for the records so he can prepare a proper reply.
How the case began
A case was registered against him over his alleged involvement in a protest at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan on October 10 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The FRRO first sent him a notice to leave India, and later the show-cause notice on cancelling his OCI status.
He has challenged the Leave India notice in the Bombay High Court, which has put it on hold for now. The next hearing is on November 2.
Why it matters
OCI status lets a foreign citizen of Indian origin live and work in India without a visa. Losing it would mean he could stay only on a visa. The allegations against him have not been proven, and the proceedings on his OCI status continue.
