New Zealand batter Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first ODI against India at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday (November 4) after a concussion suffered in a collision with teammate Matt Henry at training, Sportstar reported.

The two collided while going for an aerial catch during Tuesday's session. Conway was taken to hospital, where tests confirmed the concussion. "Conway was taken to A&E for further examination, which confirmed a concussion that has ruled him out of the first ODI against India tomorrow," New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement.

Seifert to step in

Captain Mitchell Santner said Tim Seifert would come in. "Yeah, I guess he's the back-up batter in our squad, so it'll probably be a direct swap if Dev's unavailable, which is a shame," he said at the pre-match press conference.

Santner said Henry had gone through concussion checks and seemed okay, but that the collision "didn't look too good". "It's one of those ones you want to take very seriously, head knocks," he said, according to PTI. NZC said both players underwent head injury assessments at the ground and would continue to be monitored, with an update on their part in the series to follow.

The series so far

Santner said Seifert "obviously is very good in one-day cricket" and had been biding his time during the T20 series, calling Conway's injury "another one of those freak accidents".

The ODIs follow a five-match T20I series that India won 3-2, after New Zealand fought back to take the last two games, PTI reported.
