Nepal exported electricity worth about NPR 5.92 billion, roughly $39 million, to India between mid-September and mid-October, according to a report in The Himalayan Times carried by PTI.
Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), said exports had recovered over the period after being briefly disrupted by flash floods in August. Nearly two-thirds of the power supplied to India was exported under bilateral agreements, he said.
Supply to Bangladesh resumes
On Friday, October 23, Nepal resumed exporting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh through India's transmission network.
That supply had been halted after the floods damaged the Trishuli and Chilime hydropower plants, which were designated to supply power to Bangladesh, PTI reported.
The August floods
The floods were triggered on August 26 by an ice-rock avalanche high in the Himalayas near the Nepal-Tibet border. They devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, killing around 1,400 people, while more than 5,000 remain missing, according to PTI. Homes, roads, bridges and hydropower projects were damaged.
