Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to 10 more years in prison on Thursday (November 5) for colluding with foreign forces, France 24 reported, citing AFP and a court summary.
Wong, 30, pleaded guilty in September to seeking foreign sanctions against Hong Kong and China under the national security law that Beijing imposed in 2020. He has already spent almost six years in jail. Human Rights Watch said he has been in custody since November 2020, when he was 23, and now faces prison until late 2036, when he will be 40, Mint reported.
Judge William Tam said the offence was "of a grave nature", which meant Wong had faced a possible life term, according to AFP.
What he was accused of
Prosecutors said Wong began lobbying abroad as early as 2016, when he promoted the US Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which allows the US president to impose sanctions over rights violations in the city, Mint reported. During the 2019 protests he was part of a delegation to the US that lobbied for the bill, which was later passed. He was charged with the new offence in June 2025 while serving a sentence for subversion.
In his mitigation letter, seen by AFP, Wong said he had hoped to leave prison in 2027, but the new charge made him feel he was back to square one.
Reactions
- The US consulate in Hong Kong said it "strongly condemns" the sentence and called for his immediate release.
- China's foreign ministry said it "firmly supports" Hong Kong in safeguarding national security and told other parties to stop "interfering in Hong Kong's judiciary and China's internal affairs".
- Hong Kong authorities say the security law is crucial for the city's stability after the 2019 protests and that law enforcement is evidence-based, Mint reported.
Background
Wong rose to fame during the 2014 Umbrella Movement protests and has been in and out of jail since 2017. In 2024 he was among dozens of pro-democracy figures jailed for "subversion" in Hong Kong's largest national security trial. After the security law was imposed, opposition groups disbanded and many activists left the city.
