P.V. Sindhu has qualified for the year-ending BWF World Tour Finals, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed on Wednesday (November 4). The tournament will be played in Hangzhou, China, from December 9 to 13.

It will be the 31-year-old's sixth appearance at the Finals and her first since 2021, Sportstar reported. She qualified in 2022 but pulled out with an injury.

An Se Young, Akane Yamaguchi, Wang Zhi Yi and Chen Yu Fei have also secured their places.

How she got there

Sindhu won the Hylo Open in Germany last week. The Super 500 title added 9,200 points to her tally and moved her up two places to sixth in the world rankings, The Free Press Journal reported, citing an agency report. It was her second title of the year after the Japan Open Super 750 in July, and the first season since 2022 in which she has won more than one World Tour title. She now has seven in all.

She also reached the final of the French Open, where she lost to world No. 1 An Se Young of Korea.

Why it matters

The Finals are limited to the top eight players of the season, The Free Press Journal reported. Sindhu is the only Indian to have won the women's singles title, beating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the 2018 final. This time she goes in ranked sixth in the world.

She skipped the Korea Open and Japan Masters after the Hylo Open to rest and get fit for the Finals, and is likely to play the Syed Modi International in Lucknow from November 24, Sportstar reported.
