Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India's rise to 114 medals at the Asian Para Games, saying the result reflects the "immense potential and talent" of the country's athletes, according to a Press Information Bureau release.

In a post on X, Modi set the number against an earlier tally of 14, and noted that Indian athletes won 30 gold medals, set five world records and nine Asian records, and swept the podium in four events.

The PM's two numbers

Modi singled out two figures. Of the 61 athletes making their Asian Para Games debut, 36 won medals. And 34 of the 56 women athletes came home with medals.

"Those days are long over when society frowned upon youngsters who wanted to pursue sports," he wrote. "Now, if you have the talent, India will support you and cheer for you."

The final tally

India finished fourth at the Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze, Khel Now reported, comfortably beating its previous best of 108 medals at Hangzhou.

That Hangzhou haul had initially stood at 111 medals before three were withdrawn over doping cases, India TV reported.

Para-athletics accounted for more than half of India's medals, with 22 golds among them, according to India TV.

Why it matters

The jump from 14 to 114 is the measure of how far Indian para sport has come. More than half the debutants and over 60% of the women athletes won medals, which points to depth beyond a handful of established stars.
