Manipur will form a committee representing all 36 of the state's communities to promote peace, harmony and inclusive development, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said on Saturday, according to PTI, in a report carried by The Hindu.
He said the proposal followed a question from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on whether any such committee existed to bring all communities together.
A guest house for hill chiefs
The chief minister was speaking at an event in Imphal to honour the chiefs of different tribes, held after he opened the Hill (Tribal) Chiefs' Guest House at Palace Compound as part of the Mera Hou Chongba Festival 2026. The festival celebrates peace and brotherhood among Manipur's tribes and communities.
He called the guest house "a symbol of brotherhood between the hills and the valley", not just a building.
"All communities defended Manipur"
Khemchand Singh said every community had helped defend Manipur through its history, recalling the Anglo-Manipur War and the Seven Years' Devastation. He said he was happy that people from the hill areas, including some who had earlier been reluctant to visit Imphal, had joined this year's festival, and hoped it would bring peace and prosperity.
