India has extended a $500 million line of credit to Guyana for roads, health and defence projects, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced after meeting Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali in St John's, Antigua and Barbuda, The Hindu reported.

The two met on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). "Reviewed the steady progress in our bilateral cooperation, especially after PM @narendramodi's visit in 2024," Mr Jaishankar wrote on X. "Announced extension of $500 million Line of Credit for roads, health & defence projects."

Agreements signed

The two countries signed three agreements, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs:

  • supply and installation of micro and small enterprise (MSE) manufacturing projects;
  • grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects;
  • cooperation on digital public infrastructure and the functioning of a UPI-like payments system in Guyana.

The leaders also discussed trade and investment, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, digital technology and capacity building, the MEA said.

Background

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Guyana in November 2024, when the two countries built ties on digital public infrastructure and on support for farmers, particularly smallholders, ANI reported. India has already completed several development projects in Guyana, and the new credit line will strengthen that partnership, the MEA said.

On the same trip, Mr Jaishankar also met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, ANI reported.
