Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has signed a contract worth about ₹32,000 crore with the defence ministry to build five Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy, the shipyard said.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on Monday (November 2) by Dinesh Kumar, JS & AM (MS) at the ministry, and Cdr Shantanu Bose (retd), GRSE's director (shipbuilding), in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, The Week reported. The ministry also signed a contract with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for three more corvettes, taking the combined value of the two deals to ₹53,866.50 crore.
GRSE had emerged as the lowest bidder for the project. The ships are to be completed within nine years and four months of the first-stage payment, the company said in its exchange filing.
What the ships will carry
Each corvette will be 127 metres long and 17.6 metres wide, with a deadweight tonnage of 4,950 tonnes, a top speed of 26 knots and an endurance of 14 days at sea without resupply. Each will carry 11 officers and 139 sailors and be able to operate a helicopter.
The proposed weapons include medium-range anti-ship missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles (MRSAM), 324 mm torpedo tubes, a 76 mm gun and an AK-630 close-in weapon system, The Week reported. The ships are meant for anti-ship strikes, anti-submarine warfare, missile defence, escort duty and boarding and search operations.
What it means for GRSE
GRSE shares rose nearly 9% on Tuesday to an intraday high of ₹2,231 on the NSE, The Economic Times reported. Even so, the stock was down about 9% in the calendar year so far and over 14% over one year, the paper said.
The yard is currently building nine warships, including a Project 17A guided-missile frigate, four anti-submarine shallow-water craft and four next-generation offshore patrol vessels, and is working on 36 other platforms, 13 of them for export, the company said. Spread over more than nine years, the new order is a large addition to that book.
