All 14 workers who were trapped underground at a coal mine in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district have been rescued, an official said on Tuesday, according to The Hindu.

"All 14 workers have been rescued. There has been no casualty," said Satish Jha, Chairman and Managing Director of Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), a subsidiary of state-run Coal India Ltd.

What went wrong

The workers got stuck on Monday at the Kumardihi A underground mine run by ECL. A rope slipped out of the pulley drum of the system that carries miners up and down, leaving them stranded in two lifting cages about 50 metres below the surface.

What next

ECL has not said how long the workers were trapped or what caused the rope to slip. The report does not mention any inquiry into the fault.
