Shri Suktam

  1. Om hiranyavarnaam harineem suvarnarajatasrajaam. Chandraam hiranmayeem Lakshmeem jaatavedo ma aa vaha.

O Jataveda, god of fire, bring to me Lakshmi, golden in colour, wearing garlands of gold and silver, bright as the moon, made of gold.

  2. Taam ma aa vaha jaatavedo Lakshmeem anapagaamineem. Yasyaam hiranyam vindeyam gaam ashvam purushaan aham.

O god of fire, bring to me that Lakshmi who never leaves, through whom I may gain gold, cattle, horses and family.

  3. Ashvapoorvaam rathamadhyaam hastinaadapramodineem. Shriyam deveem upa hvaye shreer maa devee jushataam.

I call on the goddess Shri, before whom horses go and in whose midst chariots ride, who delights in the call of elephants; may the goddess favour me.

  4. Kaam sosmitaam hiranyapraakaaraam aardraam jvalanteem triptaam tarpayanteem. Padmesthitaam padmavarnaam taam ihopa hvaye shriyam.

I call here on Shri, who smiles, who is surrounded by gold, full of compassion, radiant, content and giving contentment, seated on a lotus and coloured like one.

  5. Chandraam prabhaasaam yashasaa jvalanteem shriyam loke devajushtaam udaaraam. Taam padmineem eem sharanam pra padye alakshmeer me nashyataam tvaam vrine.

I take refuge in Shri, bright as the moon, shining with glory, worshipped by the gods, generous, holding a lotus. May my poverty be destroyed; I choose you.

  6. Aadityavarne tapaso'dhi jaato vanaspatis tava vriksho'tha bilvah. Tasya phalaani tapasaa nudantu yaa antaraa yaashcha baahyaa alakshmeeh.

O goddess radiant as the sun, from your austerity was born the bilva, best of trees. May its fruits drive away all poverty, within and without.

  7. Upaitu maam devasakhah keertishcha maninaa saha. Praadurbhooto'smi raashtre'smin keertim riddhim dadaatu me.

May the friend of the gods (Kubera) and fame come to me, with jewels. I am born in this land; may it grant me fame and prosperity.

  8. Kshutpipaasaamalaam jyeshthaam alakshmeem naashayaamy aham. Abhootim asamriddhim cha sarvaam nirnuda me grihaat.

I drive away Alakshmi, Lakshmi's elder sister, made pale by hunger and thirst. O goddess, cast every kind of want and misfortune out of my home.

  9. Gandhadvaaraam duraadharshaam nityapushtaam kareeshineem. Eeshvareem sarvabhootaanaam taam ihopa hvaye shriyam.

I call here on Shri, whose doorway is fragrance, who cannot be overcome, ever abundant, rich in cattle, the mistress of all beings.

  10. Manasah kaamam aakootim vaachah satyam asheemahi. Pashoonaam roopam annasya mayi shreeh shrayataam yashah.

May we gain the wishes and resolves of the mind and truth of speech. May Shri dwell with me as cattle, food and fame.

  11. Kardamena prajaa bhootaa mayi sambhava Kardama. Shriyam vaasaya me kule maataram padmamaalineem.

We are the children of Kardama (Lakshmi's son). O Kardama, be born in my home, and settle Mother Shri, garlanded with lotuses, in my family.

  12. Aapah srijantu snigdhaani Chikleeta vasa me grihe. Ni cha deveem maataram shriyam vaasaya me kule.

May the waters bring forth gentleness. O Chiklita (Lakshmi's son), live in my home, and settle the goddess, Mother Shri, in my family.

  13. Aardraam pushkarineem pushtim pingalaam padmamaalineem. Chandraam hiranmayeem Lakshmeem jaatavedo ma aa vaha.

O god of fire, bring to me Lakshmi, full of compassion, holding a lotus, nourishing, golden-hued, garlanded with lotuses, bright as the moon, made of gold.

  14. Aardraam yah karineem yashtim suvarnaam hemamaalineem. Sooryaam hiranmayeem Lakshmeem jaatavedo ma aa vaha.

O god of fire, bring to me Lakshmi, full of compassion, a support to all, fair of colour, wearing a golden garland, radiant as the sun, made of gold.

  15. Taam ma aa vaha jaatavedo Lakshmeem anapagaamineem. Yasyaam hiranyam prabhootam gaavo daasyo'shvaan vindeyam purushaan aham.

O god of fire, bring to me that Lakshmi who never leaves, through whom I may gain abundant gold, cattle, servants, horses and family.

  16. Yah shuchih prayato bhootvaa juhuyaad aajyam anvaham. Sooktam panchadasharcham cha shreekaamah satatam japet.
