Keshav Chandra says states will keep taxing powers under the MMDR amendments and get 92-93% of mining revenue; opposition-ruled states have objected
Union Mines Secretary Keshav Chandra said the proposed MMDR Act amendments seek parity in mineral taxation and costs across states while keeping their right to levy taxes and cess.
He said 92-93% of mining revenue goes to states and that big differences between neighbouring states can shift industry and even encourage imports.
Kerala and Jharkhand have opposed the amendment bill as an encroachment on states' rights.
