Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and fellow flydubai crew members have been awarded the First Class Order of Zayed II by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for protecting passengers during a mid-air attack, The Hindu reported, citing a Dubai Media Office statement.

The medals were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and the UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, who praised the crew's actions and sense of responsibility. The crew thanked the President and said they were proud to receive the honour, the statement said.

What happened on flight FZ1073

On September 30, flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv with more than 170 people on board, came under attack from inside the cockpit.

  • The co-pilot, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, attacked Machchhar with a crash axe, a tool kept in the cockpit for emergencies, seriously injuring him.
  • The jet plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds.
  • Machchhar, bleeding on the cockpit floor, used what the report called "the last moments of his energy" to release the cockpit door lock.
  • Passengers and crew then overpowered the co-pilot, and two other flydubai pilots travelling on board landed the plane in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

The co-pilot was taken into custody. Machchhar was first treated in a hospital in Tabuk and later moved to Abu Dhabi.

What investigators have said

The motive for the attack has not been fully established, according to The Hindu. A UAE prosecutor has said the co-pilot intended to crash the plane into Tel Aviv airport, drew inspiration from the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US, and had used two earlier Dubai-Tel Aviv flights to familiarise himself with the route and airport, the newspaper has reported.
