An Australian judge ruled that a prisoner's cultural rights are limited by his sentence, upholding Victoria's 2006 ban on the spread in jails.
Andre McKechnie, 54, who is serving a life sentence for murder, argued that Victoria's prison ban on Vegemite denied him his right to "enjoy his culture as an Australian".
A Supreme Court judge rejected his appeal on Monday.
Prison authorities say the strong-smelling spread can be used to hide contraband, brew alcohol and distract sniffer dogs.
