Keralam passes law with jail terms for abusing or abandoning elders

The unanimously passed bill sets up up to three years in jail and a ₹50,000 fine for abusing or abandoning senior citizens, and makes care homes register.

The Keralam Assembly unanimously passed the Keralam Senior Citizens (Care and Protection of Rights) Bill, 2026, on Monday.

Family members or care-home staff who abuse senior citizens, or abandon them without consent, face up to three years in jail and a ₹50,000 fine.

Hindustan Times says Keralam is the first state with such a comprehensive law for senior citizens.
